The mother of suspended Spanish football president Luis Rubiales says she is ready to die for justice after being locked in a church on a hunger strike to protest her son's treatment after he kissed on the lips Spanish forward player 'Jenni Hermoso' during the final World Cup.
"I'll stay here as long as my body can," Angeles Bejar told a Spanish television station from inside the church in Motril, southern Spain, according to the Independent.
I am willing to die for justice because my son is an honest man and what they did is not right.
Bejar is locked up in the parish church of Divina Pastora, the family's hometown, along with her sister.
Rubiales' cousin, Vanessa Ruiz, on Monday described Bejar as a "woman of great faith, always seeking refuge in God", and said the family wanted Hermoso to "tell the truth" that her Kissing is not forced.
Rubiales, the head of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), was suspended by FIFA on Saturday amid fierce criticism after he kissed Hermoso on the mouth at the awards ceremony after the win of Spain at the World Cup in Sydney on August 20. Hermos says she doesn't want to be kissed.
RFEF leaders have now called for Rubiales to step down from office after holding an emergency meeting.
On Monday afternoon, the Spanish Supreme Court prosecutor said he had opened a preliminary investigation into what happened, and would contact Hermoso to ask if she wanted to press charges.
A spokesman for the court said it had received several complaints but would only conduct a full investigation if Hermoso requested it.
Rubiales, 46, objected to the kiss, saying it was consensual. Hermoso, his teammates and the Spanish government deemed it undesirable and humiliating.
At Friday's federation meeting where he was expected to step down, Rubiales instead refused to resign, seeking to defend his behavior and calling the kiss "spontaneous, reciprocal" , excitement and consensus".
Spain's interim labor minister, Yolanda DÃaz, met on Monday with representatives of the women's footballers union Futpro, which represents Hermoso and the Spanish Footballers Association, to ensure that football “benefits from good conditions and no free space for gender-based violence”.
She later told reporters that macho behavior was "systematic" in Spain and this case showed it at its worst.
