AMERICAN FAST RUNNER COLEMAN WINS 100m WITHIN SPLITS OF TIME

The American matched compatriot Noah Lyles' time of 9.83 seconds at the World Championships and Zharnel Hughes' British record was set in June.

Coleman finished fifth in the World Finals but this time held out in China to hold out Jamaican Kishane Thompson.

Melissa Courtney-Bryant finished fourth in the women's 1500m - Britain's best result in the Diamond League.

Ethiopia's Lemlem Hailu edged Kenya's Nelly Chepchirchir at home to win a high-quality race that saw four women race in less than four minutes.

Australia's Linden Hall overtook Courtney-Bryant in third as the 30-year-old Briton finished in 3 minutes 58.22 seconds. But it was the men's 100m that really made the encounter.

Coleman took the lead early in the race and maintained his form to hold off the rushing Thompson for just two hundredths of a second, as 2022 United States World Champion Fred Kerley finished third.

"It hurts a little bit but I know what I'm capable of and I know what I'm willing to do," Coleman, the 2019 world 100m champion, said of his performance at the 2019 World Championships on Sunday, last month.

"Then my mind turned to the next opportunity for success. I knew coming here would be a world-class field and an opportunity for me to bounce back."

Emmanuel Wanyonyi of Kenya also featured in the men's 800m, beating defending world champion Marco Arop of Canada by four hundredths of a second to win in a record time of 1:43.20. England's Daniel Rowdon and Ben Pattison are fifth and ninth respectively.

Jamaican Olympic champion Hansle Parchment won the men's 110m hurdles in 12.96 seconds, while American Daniel Roberts finished strong to take second place ahead of world champion Grant Holloway, who suffered only their second defeat in 2023.

In addition, Kenyan Beatrice Chebet won the women's 3000m with a record of 8:24'05, the best time in the world this year, while Briton Victoria Ohuruogu finished fifth in the women's 400m, winning over Dominican Marileidy Paulino.

The Diamond League series will take place in Brussels on September 8 and conclude in the US with the finale in Eugene, Oregon on September 16-17.
