Nigerian banks, including the United Bank of Africa (UBA) and Access Bank,
among others, jointly announced their intention to launch a two-day
nationwide strike. They say that financial services will not be available on
September 5 and 6, 2023.
This decision follows a directive issued by the National Union of Bankers,
Insurance and Financial Institutions, sent in a note dated 2 September 2023
and signed by the union's secretary general, Mohammed I. Sheikh.
The memo explicitly refers to the strike notice issued by the Nigerian
Labor Congress earlier on August 31.
NUBIFIE also brought charges against the federal government, accusing it of
meddling in union affairs rather than focusing on economic issues.
The notice reads: “According to the statement issued after the meeting of
the National Executive Council (NEC) of the Nigerian Labor Congress (NLC)
held on Thursday 31 August 2023, all Affiliates should direct all of
their members to begin withdrawing a two-day service. Tuesday and
Wednesday September 5 and 6, 2023.
“These guidelines are required in order to attract the necessary attention
from the government and warn the government that the new government finds a
tendency to interfere in the internal affairs of unions rather than deal
with the situation of the bad economy we're having.
“We direct all of our agencies to comply with this directive by
ensuring that all our members are given two days of leave. Your cooperation
in this matter will be highly appreciated.
Meanwhile, the federal government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in an
attempt to prevent a warning strike by the Nigerian Labor Parliament,
scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, has shown concern to the resumption of
negotiations with unions.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, stated
this in an interview with THE PUNCH, Saturday 2 September 2023.
According to him, the government will meet with union leaders to avoid
an impending strike.
