The New Nigeria People's Party (NNPP) has pointed fingers at former presidential candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso, alleging his involvement in the loss of Kano Governor Yusuf Abba at the State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal.
The party claims that Kwankwaso's actions were driven by personal gain, as he allegedly traded NNPP's interests to secure a ministerial slot in President Bola Tinubu's administration.
Recently, the Kano State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal ruled in favor of the All Progressives Congress (APC), declaring Nasir Gawuna as the winner of the March 18 governorship election while stripping Abba of his Certificate of Return.
The tribunal's decision hinged on the invalidity of the NNPP's vote margin, citing non-stamped and unsigned ballot papers totaling 165,663 votes, in violation of the 2022 electoral act.
Responding to these developments, Alhaji Abass Akande Onilewura, a prominent NNPP figure in the Southwest, issued a statement condemning Kwankwaso's alleged anti-party activities.
Onilewura contends that Kwankwaso's failure to adhere to due process in candidate selection resulted in the nomination of unpopular and unacceptable flagbearers.
He further asserted, "This loss is a significant setback for NNPP and can be attributed to Kwankwaso's self-serving actions, where he seemingly auctioned the party to the highest bidder. Our investigation also suggests that Kwankwaso's continued engagement with the APC created vulnerabilities exploited to secure victory for the opposition in Kano."
Onilewura went on to emphasize the party's commitment to protecting its integrity and urged Kwankwaso to steer clear of NNPP.
He assured NNPP members that a new leadership had assumed control and vowed to restore the party's prominence as a strong voice for justice, equity, and good governance.
