PRESIDENTAL ELECTIONS: TRIBUNAL TO GIVE FINAL JUDGEMENT ON COMING WEDNESDAY

(PEPC) The Presidential Election Petitions Court will issue a ruling on Wednesday, September 6  on petitions against the claims of Ahmed Bola Tinubu, winner of the presidential election of February, 25th. 



The court made the ruling after the plaintiffs, the People's Democratic Party and its flag bearers, Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, and the Labor Party, then ended the case in June after calling 40 out of 150 witnesses listed earlier in their case against the winning of the president by the All progressive congress party.


The Court also reserved its ruling on  petitions filed by the Allied People's Movement (APM) against declaring President Tinubu the winner of the election.


Court consolidated three pending lawsuits against President-elect Bola Tinubu's victory.


Court compiled petitions filed by different political parties, released a pre-trial record of the petition, and presented a trial schedule.  


The petition is marked:

CA/PEPC/05/2023, CA/PEPC/04/2023 and CA/PEPC/03/2023. The court held that the decision became necessary because the petitions addressed issues related to the election.



On March 1, 2023, the Independent National Election Commission (INEC) announced Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the winner of the presidential election on February 25, 2023, citing his party, the All Progressives' Congress (APC), getting the highest score with the number of votes cast in the ballot. And that he obtained at least one-quarter of the votes cast in two-thirds of the totality States and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), according to requirements by law.



In the results announced on March 1, 2023, Tinubu won 8,794,726 votes, or 36.61% of the total votes in the election to gain victory.


Atiku, who came in second, won 6,984,520 or 29.07% of the vote.


While Obi won 6,101,533 or 25.40% of the vote in the contested election.  However,  Obi and Atiku are, in their respective cases, confronting the elections based on INEC's inability to transmit results electronically from  polling stations.



They also argue that Tinubu failed to secure a majority of the votes in the election and 25% of the votes in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), which they consider to be a constitutional requirement for a candidate to be elected or win the election.
