The Members of the Nigerian Labor Congress(NLC) in alliance with Trade Union Congress(TUC) have recently advised that citizens should sealed up their homes with food, drugs and essential needs for the upcoming total shutdown probably on 3rd of October, which is next week.
This is precedent to a joint press conference held on Tuesday by the two leaders of the coalition in Abuja, the national capital.
Unions have also asked their national branches to mobilize protests across the country.
It is reported that the leaders of the two central unions had resolved their differences, prompting the NLC alone to carry out a two-day warning strike without the participation of the TUC.
According to the meeting notice signed by NLC Secretary, Emmanuel Ugboaja, the meeting will be held virtually.
Meanwhile, Minister of Labor and Employment, Simon Lalong, has called on NLC leaders to call off the planned strike, assuring them that the Federal Government is committed to addressing concerns raised.
The Minister also noted that one of the main demands of the NLC in its last meeting had been met, which was the release of the leaders of the Nigerian Union of Road Transport Workers.
A statement signed by the ministry's spokesperson, Olajide Oshundu, urged the unions to give the government more time to resolve other issues.
On Tuesday, September 5 and Wednesday, September 6, 2023, the NLC launched a two-day warning strike aimed at forcing the government to address the immense suffering of Nigerians, especially especially workers.
Sources familiar with the matter said the two sides, after a meeting of separate agencies, began a joint press conference at 3 p.m on Tuesday to announce a nationwide indefinite strike to begin on Oct 3rd, following the Federal Government's failure to address the suffering and other socio-economic hardships caused by the removal of the Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) subsidy , commonly known as gasoline.
