Amidst a cloud of uncertainty stemming from the current economic downturn with a two-day warning strike by unions and tomorrow's ruling by the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC), the directors Security yesterday was summoned to an emergency meeting with the president, Bola Tinubu.
The meeting, which was held behind closed doors, also came after the Ministry of State Security (DSS) released a security report that revealed the plots of some elements to organize violent protests in order to destroy the country's reputation.
It was the first security meeting attended by Defense Minister Mohammed Badaru and Defense Minister Bello Mattawale since they took office as members of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) last Monday.
The security chiefs did not disclose what was discussed at the meeting, nor did they talk about new directives they received from the president ahead of their trip to the G20 leaders summit in India.
Also present at the meeting were the Chief of Staff of the Ministry of Defense, General Christopher Musa; Army Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja; his Navy counterpart, Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla; and Air Force Chief of Staff, Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar.
According to DSS spokesman Peter Afunanya, Intelligence reports have shown that among the conspirators of the violent protests are a number of politicians who are desperate to mobilize student leaders , ethnic associations, youth and discontent groups for the planned action.
The bureau has identified the ringleaders and closely monitors them to prevent them from pushing the country into turmoil.
In light of this development, university vice-chancellors and directors of higher education institutions should encourage their students not to engage in behaviors that may disrupt public order, He said.
