Major General Umar Muazu Mohammed, the former Group Managing Director and Executive Vice Chairman of Nigerian Army Properties Limited, has been found guilty of 14 out of 18 count charges, all in direct violation of service laws by a Special Court-Martial established by the Nigerian Army.
Among the litany of charges brought against Major General UM Mohammed were allegations of theft, forgery, conspiracy, unauthorized diversion of Army property, and more, all of which fall under the purview of military discipline.
The accusations spanned from the collection of a staggering $1.045 million in payments from shipping companies for the use of the Nigerian Army Jetty in Victoria Island, Lagos, to the theft of $430,800 from the Nigerian Army Domiciliary account at Unity Bank in Abuja.
Perhaps the most shocking revelation was the accusation that Major General Mohammed had withdrawn and seized a whopping N74 million out of N75 million earmarked for a Nigerian Army property in Ikoyi, Lagos.
However, he was exonerated from allegations involving the sale of Army property worth N200 million in Lagos, as well as the embezzlement of N750 million from a fund secured from banks and subscribers for an Army housing estate in Asokoro, Abuja.
Furthermore, he was not found guilty of charges related to the forgery of a Deed of Agreement document concerning another Army property in Lagos.
The Special Court Martial, presided over by Major General Kames Myam, with seven other Major Generals serving as members and a Brigadier General as the Judge Advocate, is set to announce its sentences for the accused next Tuesday.
During the court-martial, Major General UM Mohammed appeared in a wheelchair, but the President of the court, Major Gen Myam, assured the public that all necessary medical assessments confirmed his fitness for trial.
