The French prime minister has escalated the country's counter-terrorism alert to its highest level following a tragic incident where an assailant fatally stabbed a teacher and seriously injured two others.
The attacker reportedly shouted "Allahu Akbar," meaning "God is greatest," during the assault, which took place at a school in Arras, northern France. The perpetrator is now in police custody.
The decision to elevate the threat level to "attack emergency" is not unprecedented and has been implemented in previous counter-terrorism situations. This heightened alert status can lead to increased security measures and public warnings.
In response to the incident, France has taken proactive measures to enhance security. Over 7,000 soldiers were mobilized for intensified security patrols, and the Louvre Museum in Paris was temporarily closed for security reasons.
Additionally, the Palace of Versailles faced evacuation due to a bomb threat that was conveyed via an anonymous online message. A source close to the situation noted that the palace, a major tourist attraction, would remain closed for at least the rest of the day.
The attack occurred at Gambetta high school in the northern city, around 11:00 local time on a Friday. It took place amid rising tensions in France's significant Muslim and Jewish communities, primarily stemming from the Israel-Hamas conflict.
Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin asserted that there is "no doubt" of a connection between the Arras attack and the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.
The assailant, identified as 20-year-old Russian national Mohamed Mogouchkov of Chechen origin, was already known to security services for his involvement with Islamist extremism.
Reports suggest that his use of extremist language during his time as a student at the school had raised concerns among teachers.
Police also apprehended several members of the assailant's family, including a 17-year-old brother, his mother, a sister, and an uncle.
Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne made the decision to elevate the threat level after a security meeting with President Emmanuel Macron, reflecting the urgency of the situation.
