In a recent development, Syrian state media reports that Israeli forces have launched missile strikes on the country's two major international airports, causing significant damage and rendering them temporarily non-operational.
The attacks, which took place at Damascus and Aleppo airports, have resulted in damage to their runways. Consequently, all incoming and outgoing flights are being redirected to Latakia, a city located in north-west Syria. Notably, Israel has not officially commented on these airstrikes.
These incidents are not isolated, as Israel has previously been involved in similar actions within war-torn Syria, often targeting installations associated with Iran.
It's important to note that both Damascus and Aleppo airports serve dual purposes, not only handling civil aviation but also hosting military bases.
These bases have been widely reported to act as transit points for Iranian arms destined for Hezbollah, a powerful militant group with a significant presence in both Syria and Lebanon.
An unnamed military source cited by Syrian state media characterized these Israeli strikes as "simultaneous" and explained that they have severely damaged the landing strips at both airports, causing a suspension of their services.
The source described Israel's actions as a "desperate" attempt to divert attention from the ongoing Gaza conflict.
In another dimension of this complex geopolitical situation, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, who had plans to visit Syria in the coming days, has already arrived in Iraq.
His regional tour is believed to be an effort by Tehran to garner support for Hamas, the ruling authority in the Gaza Strip. It's worth noting that Iran has a contentious relationship with Israel and celebrated a recent Hamas attack that resulted in casualties among Israelis.
The Gaza conflict has further escalated tensions, with Israel responding to attacks with airstrikes that have caused extensive damage in Gaza. Palestinian officials have reported a substantial number of casualties, with over 1,400 people reportedly killed in these bombings.
In the wake of the recent hostilities, there have been sporadic cross-border exchanges of fire between Israel and militant groups in southern Lebanon and Syria.
In response, Israel has deployed additional forces to the northern region to counter potential threats from groups like Hezbollah.
